The Montlake Boulevard Market passed into memory on Christmas Eve. It was a slow death by Eminent Domain but the last days were peaceful. The store is preceded in death by her owner, Jack Baker.
Born during the Depression as the first Safeway in Washington State, the market served the families of Montlake for nearly a century.
Previously known as the Hop-In, the market was also an attraction for local kids to: congregate after school, find munchies after smoking pot in the arb or to score a buyer for cheap beer. In her better days, her deli and eclectic selection of foods nourished locals and attracted interlake visitors. With her loss, the area becomes a food desert.
Many-a-Saturday in the fall, you could find Husky Fans congregated around her to tailgate. It was a swarm of purple, often with radio stations set up to cover the festivities. Fans grieved at Apple Cup when they came together to bid farewell.
The Mountlake Boulevard Market is survived by her owners Scott Iverson and Scott Baker (Lynda) as well as partners Lynn Greunke and Jeff Baker (Nancy) and nearly 20 employees.
